What your mother never told you about: Internet Marketing
So thanks to analytic’s (awebers, googles, other third party tools) I know a lot about you (readers of this blog), and a lot more than you think I know about you personally if I really want to. I don’t mean I’m spying on you – but there are so many tracking tools that I can literally watch YOU specifically run around my websites, watch you order something, watch what you do and don’t buy when I sell it, etc…
I can use heatmaps to see where you put your mouse, how many seconds you spent on my pages, etc…
I can tell how many things you’ve bought from me over the last few years, and even send specific messages to those that seem to have a trigger just for you.
Now I think I’m one of the good guys. I don’t peddle info crap – but if I did, I could literally target you like a patriot missle hits a doorway
I’d end up shuffling you into the “target” group that seems to respond to xyz type offers with zyz type headlines and blast away until I’d milked you of every drop.
The good news is I don’t use 99 percent of the things available to me – I enjoy what I do, and that’s that. For those that know me I hate tedious research, spreadsheets, and anything that looks like it’s going to give me a head ache
So no I’m not tracking you
That’s to much work if you aren’t trying to trick people.
My point is that you need to be aware of those things….. and once you are you start to not fall for the same old junk anymore. I want you to promise me you are going to bookmark the link I’m about to give you. Each time you start to think, “I need this $997 course or seminar” I want you to come read it. Ready: http://www.blackhatdigest.com/the-real-anatomy-of-product-launch-and-digital-product-creation/. Heck come read it anytime you get more than three e-mails about any product launch. Keep reading it until you don’t spend that $997 (or $10 even) dollars unless you know you need it. Chances are that 997 dollar course is a rehash of some forum thread somewhere anyway.
That’s my free gift for you today. I KNOW I could package it up all pretty and sell it and even get good reviews. It’s what I’ve seen done over and over for the last 10 years. People don’t use what they get, and there are so many rip off “guru’s” peddling crap it’s amazing. Information about how to make money on-line isn’t always right. My god – I’ve seen some of the ‘experimental’ posts at blackhatdigest.com being sold word for word in a WSO.
However, the guy had screenshots showing his income…. and I’d made the post 3 days before.
In fact I’ve watched myself really really really lower my prices on stuff over the years – not so much for demand (I actually make less when I lower my prices on things), but because I know a large portion who buy a script or tool will never use it. It drives me crazy. I’ve been doing this long enough that the ‘fun’ is gone out of it. I still enjoy writing in my blogs, and making things. The marketing part just sucks – because to get the attention needed to sell something I’ve got to worry about headlines and response rates, and all that crap. I didn’t like it 10 years ago and I really really hate it now
Chances are that you haven’t been trying to make money on-line unsuccessfully for 10 years… at least if you’ve taken action somewhere (anywhere) … but I know a few people reading this might not fess up to it but have. Yep – I see names from 10 years ago who are still buying ‘newbie guides’ in the warrior forum hoping for some golden nugget.
If I was to put on my psychologist hat (I’m not one but I play one on T.V.), I’d say those people are paralyzed by one of three or four things.
1.) Laziness
2.) Fear (of success and failure both – neither can happen if you don’t do it)
3.) Time wasting addiction.
4.) Adult ADD.
Now I can’t help with number 1, and number 2 you’ve just got to accept that things will happen that aren’t in your control and do it anyway to the best of your abilities. But number 3 is something you can fix. Hanging in forums is good for one thing —- PROMOTION. But it has to be planned and timed. I’ve got probably 10k posts in various forums. I do it when I’m not busy. That’s it. If I’ve got work to do you won’t see me in a forum. Youtube and facebook I ignore 100 percent
There are applications you can use to help you with that. If you’ve got that problem use them.
If you have adult Attention Deficit Disorder you can just decide to stick with one thing. UNTIL IT’S DONE.. or you’ve got to find a way that works for you. I work on blog posts like this in phases. I have drafts on all my blogs that I work on a little at a time. Why? I’ve got attention problems
But I’ve found a way that works for me. In fact I’m bored with this right now so I’ll come back to it in a few days.
You are the only one who can change your situation for the better or worse – so do something constructive now. I just came back to writing this after a 4 day break. It’s not boring anymore, so I feel that I can jump to the next part of what I wanted to hit in this post.
Actually making money on-line
What I can tell you is that there are plenty of ways to make money on-line. In fact I’ve already given you the easiest most guaranteed way that I can: http://seowebsitefuel.com/26k-in-6-months-or-print-money-on-demand/ I’ll expand on this idea over a few issues in seowebsitefuel – it’s a worthy method of really making money.
With a little elbow grease and imagination that number really should be about 300k per year. Really – no joke, no hype. I’m serious. You’ll notice that I didn’t say it’s a magic button that you press – but I’m willing to bet you’ve bought a few of those magic buttons and they didn’t quite work did they?
Ohh – and stay out of the ‘internet marketing’ niche. It’s tough and there isn’t as much money in it as you think unless you are willing to sell your soul and rip people off. Read that first link up there – you’ll see what I’m talking about.
That’s enough of the “What Your Mother Never Told You” bit for today. In fact your mother probably knows nothing about internet marketing, and she thinks SEO stands for a cuss word
That method not your thing? That’s cool – you can make sites that suggest things people want to buy, silly sites that depend on cpm models, etc… I’ll cover a lot of different types of sites in future issues of seowebsitefuel. I’m interested in what you know and what you don’t know though.
You know what would be great - if everyone who read this left a well thought out comment on the breaking point for them. What they did to make their first dollar, or what they are going to do to do so. Tell me if you need help making seed money, or a tool to make it happen, or a tutorial, or whatever. I really do want to help, but since I’ve already made it clear that I’m not tracking your every move – you’ve got to tell me. If you don’t need those things – help others. If your comment isn’t spammy it will appear!

Ed,
Are you sure you didn’t use analytics to track me lately? After purchasing the facebook series and writing you to tell my personal income goals, reading the article above and the other referenced tome on $26K in 6 months, both hit me squarely between the eyes. I may be hopeless tho, I suffer from all 4 of the paralyzing items you mentioned, lol!
Suffice it to say, I’m definitely on board as I’ve thought a lot recently about selling a number of developed sites although I’m going through the learning curve on what and where to sell. I’m far beyond making my first dollar online, but I’ve yet to make a living from online commerce, so here we go….
Rel
Rel – Your e-mail may have inspired me to come back and finish this post tonight. I’ll promise I didn’t track you though.
I actually got several e-mails about people in similar boats today. Felt it was just time to finish the post
Hi Ed
Great post & sooo true.
I have been trying for 10yrs+ & so far have not made my fortune but have managed to overload my aging brain!
I have lots of your things which are great but I am wasting the opportunity by not following through. At least I no longer buy the magic buttons!
I am starting to get help which hopefully will get me on track. No it WILL get me on track.
Regards
Brian
Hi Ed,
Thanks for taking the time to blog your thoughts, they are a help to keep me focussed on the job in hand.
I think my main issue these days is not seeing a project all the way through to the end…. having said that the times i have seen a project through it looks like i chose my business model or niche badly as they have not converted, but hey i am busy with a new set of projects now and will see them all through and update you with my progress. (check out my latest site i linked to above, its time for diet suppliments to make some evergreen $)
I just recently joined your Auto Installed membership, so will be creating sites based on that content…. fingers crossed.
Cheers
Paul
Great article Ed,
I think everyone is affected by those 4 points above.
It sometimes takes a lot of persistence and making sure you finish one project before you start another.
I am guilty as hell of starting projects that I don’t finish.
I think that as we move along – it;s going to be even more difficult due to so many distractions – and as online entrepreneurs we have the additional problem that we are also looking around for information and learning products that may help with our journey but at the same time it distracts our main goals many times.
Really enjoyed the article ED
Many thanks
It appears you thought my comment appeared spammy as it has been removed.
Wont bother the next time
I didn’t – but askimet did – dug it out and approved it.
My Sincere apologies the above comment, i think the reason i left the comment was disbelief that you would dismiss the very comments you had asked us to make….. i must have got out of bed on the wrong side
Thanks for the great info and comments its much appreciated!
No worries Paul. I usually wake up that way and stay that way till I go back to bed
